Private and small-group tours of Capri

What’s real and what’s not
When you search for a «private Capri tour», you picture an empty boat and an itinerary you plan with the skipper. That does exist—but it’s not what you’ll find here. The best options in this selection are small-group tours, with other passengers on board. It’s worth thinking about the numbers, not the wording. Twelve people on a full-day boat is one thing; forty on a speedboat circling the island is quite another.
The number affects three measurable things: how long you wait for everyone to climb back on board after a swim, how well you can hear the guide without a microphone, and how easily you can ask for a detour. Beyond that, the differences are smaller than the headlines suggest.
Eight people: the lowest cap
The full-day tour from Sorrento with swimming and lunch is limited to eight guests—the smallest group in this selection—and the reviews reflect it: an average of 4.8, with Michael from the US praising the ‘top-tier crew’. Eight hours, hotel pickup, a Caprese sandwich and drinks on board, the Blue Grotto (weather permitting), and four hours of free time on the island.
Ideal for couples wanting a quieter boat, groups of friends who fill most of the seats, or families with children. Not the best for those looking for the most budget-friendly option—it costs more than the shorter island-based tours and some full-day trips. See the review of the lunch-included tour.
Twelve people: the compromise that works
Three tours cap at twelve guests. The exclusive tour, with a 4.8 rating from 5,215 reviews, is the most tried-and-tested in the group and includes the landing tax. The small-group full-day tour, rated 4.6 from 257 reviews, adds a van transfer from Sorrento-area meeting points—but the Blue Grotto is only seen from the water. The free-time departure, rated 4.4 from 94 reviews, is the only one that also sets off from Positano.
Twelve people on an eight-hour boat feels just right: Jake, from Australia, says the guide strikes the perfect balance between safety and friendliness, something you won’t get with forty passengers. One thing to note: the small group isn’t suitable for pregnant women or wheelchair users.

When a shared boat is perfect
The two tours from Marina Grande don’t set a passenger limit, and for what they offer, they don’t need to. An hour and a half cruising the coast, with photo stops and live commentary, works well even when the boat is full—no bathroom breaks to manage, no lunch to serve. They’re also the most budget-friendly options on the site.
If you’re already on the island and just want to see the Faraglioni, the grottoes and Punta Carena lighthouse, paying extra for a small group doesn’t make much sense. Check out the grotto tour review and the short tour review.

If there are six or seven of you, a boat with a maximum of eight feels almost like your own private charter. It’s the closest you’ll get to a private experience without hiring an entire vessel.
Check dates
Limited-capacity departures sell out faster than others, especially between June and September.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a private boat tour around Capri?
Private charters with a skipper do exist, but they’re not included in this selection. The most exclusive options here are the tours capped at eight or twelve guests—compare them in all boat tours side by side.
How many people are on board?
Eight on the full-day tour from Sorrento with lunch, twelve on the exclusive tour, the small-group option, and the flexible departure. The two shorter circuits from Marina Grande are on shared boats with no stated limit: see the tours from Sorrento for a comparison.
Is it worth paying more for a small group?
For an eight-hour day, yes: fewer people mean shorter waits at swim stops and more flexibility to make requests. For a ninety-minute island circuit, the difference is minimal, so the budget option makes more sense. The full reasoning is in how much it costs.
Are they suitable for children?
The capped-capacity departures are more child-friendly, as stops are manageable and the crew has fewer people to look after. However, the small-group tour with a van transfer isn’t suitable for pregnant women or wheelchair users: read boating with children.
