Capri or Positano: which to choose?
Two distinct experiences, not just alternatives
The question usually comes from those deciding where to stay, and the answer is almost always Positano: it’s convenient, you can stroll out in the evening, and everything’s within reach. Capri only makes sense as a base if you’re staying at least a couple of nights—its real magic happens after the ferries have left and the Piazzetta empties. One night just isn’t worth it.

Glamour, without the clichés
Both destinations share the same allure but offer distinct vibes. Capri is more cosmopolitan and dramatic—the Piazzetta, Anacapri, and yachts at anchor. Positano is softer, lived on the beach and its stairways, with evenings that don’t end when the last hydrofoil leaves. If you’re staying in Positano and want to visit Capri
There are two options. The first is the ferry—no need to book ahead, but on weekends, holidays, and in July and August, it’s wise, especially for the afternoon return. The second is a full-day boat excursion from Positano or Sorrento: eight hours, groups of up to twelve, around three and a half hours free on the island, and stops at the Faraglioni, White Grotto, and Punta Carena lighthouse. The classic mistake with just one day? Setting off too late. By 11 a.m., the island is at its worst: the dock is packed, the funicular has queues, and boats are already full.
