When is the best time to visit Capri?

When to go
In short: The season stretches from Easter holidays to the first weekend of November. Islanders point to two sweet spots — early April to mid-June and early September to mid-October — for already pleasant seas and far fewer crowds. August is still doable, but the early morning departure is key.

The full season

Boats start running regularly after Easter and wrap up by the first weekend of November. Outside that window, the island doesn’t vanish, but departures thin out, the weather calls the shots, and short loops from Marina Grande become unpredictable. If your trip falls at the edges of the season, keep a spare day in hand and read rough seas and Plan Bs before booking.

The two sweet spots on the island

The first runs from early April to mid-June. The sea warms gradually, and swimming stops become pleasant towards the end of the period, while queues for the Blue Grotto are still manageable. The second, from early September to mid-October, is what many consider the absolute best: the water has soaked up all summer’s warmth, ferries are less crowded, and the afternoon light is different. In both windows, the Blue Grotto still depends on sea and tide.

Tips from those who’ve been

Rosaria Cimmino, who grew up in Marina Grande, says the real dividing line isn’t the month but the hour: in August, the 9:30 tour is the only one that’s worth it, and when the maestrale wind blows, the grotto stays shut—and no one tells you until you’re there.

What August is really like

It’s not about avoiding it, it’s about planning. The sea is at its best in August, and the days are long; the issue is the sheer volume. Ferries from Naples and Sorrento arrive in clusters by mid-morning, turning Marina Grande into a bottleneck. The wait offshore for the grotto can stretch to two hours, spent on board under the sun. Those who take the first departure see a different island from those who leave at eleven, yet pay the same. Since Capri is small, the crowds feel more intense than on the Amalfi Coast.

Morning or afternoon

Morning almost always wins, for three distinct reasons. The sea is generally calmer before the breeze picks up. Queues are shorter because most day visitors haven’t yet disembarked. And the light inside the grotto is better in the late morning than in the late afternoon. Departures from Dock 0 run every thirty minutes from 9:30 to 14:00: the first and last are the same tour, but not the same experience. Full-day trips from the mainland leave early for this very reason, as Douglas explains in his review of the exclusive tour.

Booking by season

On weekends, holidays, and in July and August, it’s worth securing both your ferry and boat seat in advance—the afternoon return fills up first. Details are in how to get to Capri. Outside those periods, you can decide on the day. Available departures are listed in the tour hub, and what to pack for a day on the water is covered in what to wear.
